His interest in local history led to an investigation into the 1906 trial and 1907 execution of Will Banks.

Will Banks was an African American man who died in 1907 by being hung by the neck until he was dead. The crowd there was not a lynch mob, but men, women and children who came to see his execution by government authority in a remote North Carolina mountain village. The author has attempted to aid in understanding the event and the circumstances that led to it.
