When Herb Peppard volunteered for a newly formed parachute battalion that was promised quick action, he had unknowingly joined the first Special Servies Force, a combined American-Canadian elite shock force destined to become the legendary Black Devils. Despite five AWOLs he made staff sergeant (briefly) and in 1944 he was awarded one of America's highest military honors, the Silver Star, for "gallantry in action."
